This helping of ice cream is proving rather unpalatable to designers, especially members of the Society and perhaps should be retitled 'I scream'.
'Transport for London has teamed up with the London Festival of Architecture 2010 (LFA2010) to launch a competition for new illustrations and depictions of London’s skyline. The winning design, launched during the London Festival of Architecture, will be reproduced on a range of merchandise for sale online at tfl.gov.uk/shop, the London Transport Museum Shop and at the London Festival of Architecture HQ located at the New London Architecture centre, Store Street.'
The Society applauds competitions, if they are run in the interests of design, and at the same time is conscious of the significant contribution to design standards made by Transport for London throughout its history. However, in recent years they have antagonised members of the design sector with competitions that could be considered as damaging the value of using professional designers.
The first prize in this competition is £1,000, however all IP rights are assigned to Transport for London. If the sales of the merchandising and shelf life are anything like those of previous designs used by the company, then the designer will be missing out big time. The second and third winners will receive a royalty payment although the terms are not specified. Details of the competition can be found here ...
The judging panel includes amongst others, Lynda Relph-Knight, the editor of a weekly design publication which in the past has been critical of such competitions. Our members are not impressed ...
" So much for Lynda Relph-Knight calling for respect for designers in her rather badly designed weekly when she takes part in this." CSD Fellow
"Clearly it's design on the cheap again.
I wonder if Frank Pick and Charles Holden, were asked to provide their 'energy and vision' at college rates.
The winning prize (IP included) of £1,000 is both laughable and derisory.
Maybe Lynda Relph-Knight and the other judges can justify their position through the pages of Design Week? It could be that we're all missing something." CSD Member
"Amanda Levete, Angus Hyland and Lynda Relph-Knight should be ashamed of themselves." CSD Fellow
Let us know what you think as a designer and we will post them here. You can email your comments to info@csd.org.uk or follow the discussion on the CSD Linkedin space.
In the meantime here is an example of the good design that comes from Transport for London produced by M&C Saatchi and credits to Peter Saville. Wonder if they split the £1,000 !
Well we thought that with all those creatives watching someone would get the answer - but still no winner. So we are upping the prize from one day to two. The first person to email CSD and give us the correct reason why this page is called what it is, will receive two full day's free membership to the CSD. You have to be exactly right though!!
Here are a couple of the (failed) attempts to date .....
