CSD CEP Design Student Prize profiles: Angus Thomson Assoc.CSD, Product Design

Every year we celebrate graduating CSD CEP student designers across the globe through in-person and online award ceremonies.

The CSD CEP Student Prize is awarded yearly to one design student from each of the CEP design courses who has demonstrated great work throughout their course, recognising their talents and constant hard work.

As part of our celebrations, we’re showcasing talented CSD CEP Student Prize winner Angus Thomson Assoc.CSD from Sheffield Hallam University about his design approach and plans for the future.

Tell us a little about your work:

I have always enjoyed creating but studying both Product Design and Art at school opened my eyes to the potential that design offers, and the opportunities open to designers to have an active role in making a difference in peoples’ lives. I want to make a difference, this is my strongest inspiration and motivation, I now know I can use my creativity as a designer to do that.

My project, Stor, is a modern twist on hospital bedside storage, which ensures that belongings are at an accessible height when patients need them most. The addition of a laundry bin and general waste bin provides the opportunity to store items patients may wish to keep private, whilst the single rotomolded shell make the unit easy to clean, creating a more positive experience for patients and healthcare workers alike.

What does being awarded the CSD CEP Student Prize mean to you?

I am delighted to be awarded the CEP Student Prize. I am proud that my work over the year has been recognised and validated by both my university and the Society. The award renews my motivation and highlights my commitment to working in this area moving forward. I am thankful and delighted to be a recipient.

What’s next for you?

I am currently travelling across Australia for a year. As part of my journey, I will be looking for design positions alongside working with my uncle to design pools and spas. This will help me gain experience and understanding of the process from the initial concept to the final outcome, in turn aiding me in my long-term job search.
