Upcoming competitions for designers

There are lots of opportunities to get your name out there, stretch your creative abilities, and have some fun with design.

Here are some of the best competitions coming up towards the end of this year and the beginning of 2019 – take a look and see if you get inspired!

IIDA Global Excellence Awards

Winning one of these awards will get your work featured on the IIDA website, social media, and a special Winners Brochure. Interior designers and interior architects can submit any projects from outside the USA – but be quick! The deadline is 9 November 2018.

Red Dot Award: Product Design 2019

Early bird entries for the Red Dot Award: Product Design are now open to manufacturers and designers from all over the world – and if you’re a young professional, you have a special application day on 5 December. There are 48 categories, so you’re bound to find something that interests you.


The sixth edition of this international contest gives the winners a chance to present their work in prestigious galleries. There are ten different categories, including product design, fashion design, and computer graphic. The deadline for this is 9 December 2018, so make sure you don’t miss this opportunity.

New York Festivals 2019 Advertising Awards

These awards recognise the best and most innovative marketing campaigns throughout the year, and has a special student category with discount entry fees. So, does your advertising project deserve an award? Apply now – the deadline is 15 December 2018.

D&AD New Blood Awards 2019

Here’s one for students and new designers: D&AD has launched its annual New Blood Awards. There’s a wide range of briefs to explore from brands and organisations like Adidas, the BBC, and Virgin Atlantic. It’ll be opening for entry in January, so get thinking now to make sure your submission is ready in time!

International Lighting Design Competition

The Lighting Architecture Movement Project (LAMP) is holding its sixth competition for lighting design. It’s partnered with Design Milk this year, and your designs will be considered by some of the best professionals in the industry. This year’s theme is ‘TEXTURE’, and you’ve got lots of time to think it over: the deadline is 31 January 2019.
