The most valuable commodity to designers is their Intellectual Property (IP). It is therefore extremely important to understand at least the basics of IP and  why and how you should protect it.

CSD provides members with three key services to ensure they understand and benefit from their IP.

Members IP service
Members are able to call on the expertise of a specialist IP firm that provides legal advice and registration services to advise on how to protect their IP rights. In addition, a range of services is offered for added protection including legal assistance in the event of IP infringement.

Knowledge of IP matters is not only important in protecting designers but it also allows them to work with their clients in order that they too can benefit from services including: protection of the design work commissioned, implementing copyright assignments and licensing agreements with the designer.

Members benefit from a FREE consultation on any IP matters. If required this can be followed up by a written report setting out the advice given, which may be used as a basis for discussions with a client prior to commencing work or assist in the event of any future problems. CSD members also receive preferential rates for these reports.

The World Intellectual Property Organisation, of which CSD holds Observer Status, has launched WIPO Gold, a portal intended to be a dynamic and evolving tool, expanding over time to build a one-stop gateway for IP data.

Design Council rebuked

In a press release today, British Design Innovation (BDI) rebuked the Design Council for comments made by its Chair Lord Michael Bichard when announcing the Design Council review as to 'market failure'.

Frank Peters FCSD, Chief Executive of CSD said, 'We appear to be in strong agreement with BDI on this matter and it would be interesting to hear what the DBA have to say on the issue' read more ...

Government announces review of the Design Council

The government has announced a review of the Design Council to consider its role and status. The review will be chaired by Martin Temple CBE and will report back to the minister in September.

CSD on panel for Ergonomic Design Awards

The CSD President, Chris Ramsden FCSD, will be joining the panel of judges for the Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors' (IEHF) Ergonomic Design Awards later this year.

Commenting on the awards, Chris said, 'Ergonomics are vital to good design and the Society is pleased to have built a strategic relationship with IEHF. The awards are only one aspect of the partnership which will be strengthened by future collaborations on training modules and joint events.'
