becoming a Fellow of the Society

Fellowship of the Society is a great honour and is only awarded to those who have proven themselves in the field of design.

Cost: £264 per annum UK - £220 per annum Overseas.

Those members awarded the affix MCSD do not have to pay for the Fellowship upgrade.

Members holding the affix MCSD may submit a written application to upgrade to FCSD. They may be asked to attend an informal interview.

Designers seeking FCSD who are not members of the Society or whose membership has been lapsed, must attend an assessment.

Criteria for Fellowship of CSD:

The basic criteria for achieving FCSD:

- A formal recognised design qualification at BA/BSc level plus work experience of at least five years, or

- If you do not possess a recognised degree or qualification, the period of work experience should be at least seven years.

In addition:

In order to award Fellowship, the assessors will be looking for you to demonstrate:

- exceptional professional practice skills

- a high degree of creativity

- demonstrable management and business understanding.

You will also be expected to have made a significant contribution in 3 key areas:

- to the design profession

- to your own professional life in design

- to the Society

Fellowship (FCSD) membership includes:

- Use of the affix FCSD™.

- A FCSD membership certificate.

- Eligibility to vote at the Society's AGM.

- Access to the members pages of the CSD website

- Membership of Design Pool and Design Mine

- Your own online profile and portfolio

- Listing on 'Find a Designer'

- Discounts on CPD training modules.

- Discounts on CSD events.

- Access to available professional services.

- Professional advice and initial consultation with advisors.

- Regional networking.

- Access to available professional information & publications.

- Invitations to Fellowship only events.

Design Council rebuked

In a press release today, British Design Innovation (BDI) rebuked the Design Council for comments made by its Chair Lord Michael Bichard when announcing the Design Council review as to 'market failure'.

Frank Peters FCSD, Chief Executive of CSD said, 'We appear to be in strong agreement with BDI on this matter and it would be interesting to hear what the DBA have to say on the issue' read more ...

Government announces review of the Design Council

The government has announced a review of the Design Council to consider its role and status. The review will be chaired by Martin Temple CBE and will report back to the minister in September.

CSD on panel for Ergonomic Design Awards

The CSD President, Chris Ramsden FCSD, will be joining the panel of judges for the Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors' (IEHF) Ergonomic Design Awards later this year.

Commenting on the awards, Chris said, 'Ergonomics are vital to good design and the Society is pleased to have built a strategic relationship with IEHF. The awards are only one aspect of the partnership which will be strengthened by future collaborations on training modules and joint events.'
