CSD Supports World Intellectual Property Day
On World Intellectual Property Day this year, WIPO celebrates the link between intellectual property (IP) and creativity under the theme - Encouraging Creativity.
The aims of World IP Day are:
• to raise awareness of how patents, copyright, trademarks and designs impact on daily life;
• to increase understanding of how protecting IP rights helps promote creativity and innovation;
• to celebrate creativity, and the contribution made by creators and innovators to the development of societies across the globe;
• to encourage respect for the IP rights of others.
Margaret Briffa, a leading intellectual property lawyer and founding partner of Briffa, said " The World International IP Day is another great reminder to all creative businesses about the importance of building value for themselves and their clients through the use of intellectual property".
The Chartered Society of Designers (CSD) has recently been granted observer status to the meetings of the Assemblies of the member States of WIPO and the Unions administered by WIPO.
Of the appointment to WIPO observer status, CSD Chief Executive Frank Peters FCSD said;
"This is a unique opportunity for CSD to influence the International IP agenda for the benefit of its members and the design profession.
This appointment continues our strategy of international collaboration on initiatives that will influence new working models for design.
There is a large degree of scepticism in the west as to the protection of IP when dealing with the emerging and Far East economies but these concerns are echoed by those with whom we are collaborating in Asia and our regional members there.
The work of WIPO is essential in establishing agreements that protect designers around the world and we are pleased to be able to offer our assistance as Observers."
