Brief
"To design a visual style for a contemporary exhibition celebrating the 10th anniversary of The Dylan Thomas Festival.
Produce a name and visual toolkit, which incorporates colour and typographic treatment.
Apply the visual style to a range of sample spreads and accompanying promotional items.
Focusing on 1000 words of body copy from the play 'Under Milk Wood'.
Audience
'Closer Now' is aimed at a wide audience, at a wide audience, which includes literary enthusiasts, young writers, creatives of all ages, and lovers of Dylan Thomas' work.
Due to this diverse audience, the style of graphic communication sets about providing a rationale in regards to the content and design direction which were focused on within the final solutions; this showing clear and concise typographic communication.
Style
Influences were initially from visual poetry and deconstruction typography. Early developments used limited colours to produce a dreamy, watery theme, based around the main characters.
This was then developed to enable each character to have their own typographic voice which is set out as an instruction to the catalogue to enable the audience to fully understand the contemporary interpretation.
This allows a more expressive and experimental approach through the typography and layout of the catalogue".
