CSD STUDENT MEDAL 2006: GRAPHIC
SPEED CAMERA ARGUMENT
Paul Matthews
Southampton Solent University
"The brief for the argument project was to talk about a talk or discussion which could get heated between two different people.
The argument had to be a strong subject and you could show two sides of the argument visually with text from what was said in the argument and to show this visually.
The argument that we were passionate about was speed cameras and we both had a lot to say on the subject. I was against speed cameras and my friend was for them.
The outcome of the argument had to be visual and your side of the argument had to win and win in a visual style. I chose the effect of mix media and mark making, because I could show speed and skidding which linked in with speed.
The sweeping 'S' of the design itself looks like a track, so you represent speed and flow when you look at it.
The two sides of the argument were shown in the two colours: the winning argument (mine) is shown in red and the losing argument (my friend) is shown in black. The losing argument has lost because it is overpowered and the typography is less dominant.
The argument has been laid out on three different design boards that link together to show the whole argument, but the three boards also work on their own as separate design images."
